I used to have actual pen-friends. I wrote letters and put them in the snail-mail. When I wanted to talk to my friends, I had to ask permission from my parents to use the phone (which was in a public part of the house) call their landline, usually speak to their parents first, and then talk to my friend. If my friend was out, I had to wait and call back later. There was a lot more accountability regarding communication, which, I feel, meant a lot less danger. I couldn’t get some random old guy’s number and talk with them secretly on the phone, because my parents monitored the phone.
