I have seen students go to a great deal of effort in trying to solve a problem - and that effort simply demonstrated that they didn’t understand the question or the approach to how to solve it or the principles involved in solving the problem - that is, they didn’t understand the material well enough to solve the problem. What they showed by the effort they put in was a lack of understanding. Should that problem be graded on the effort or the approach and correctness of the solution?
