My public school classrooms had up to 35 kids.Then came the IQ tests. A group of us were indentified as gifted. This meant the teacher didn't have to focus on us. Now the class was down to about 27. Much better! But then they started to fold in the developmentally delayed kids, based on their mental age. They parked at the back of the room. It was a disaster. No one was mean to them, but they didn't fit. Eventually they got their own school. We didn't. IQ tests brought expectations. High IQ types were the privileged children. And yeah, some of us taught the others. But we had become utilities in an overworked system. Until we hit grade 13, school was a palpable sigh when Johnny had to answer questions we had figured out months ago by skipping forward.
