First, I should point out that no teacher strike comes out of nowhere. In order for teachers to strike, months or years of contract negotiations have to have gone nowhere. Teachers almost inevitably “win,” but that win is usually a Pyrrhic victory. Much of the raise they may win is eaten by the amount of money they didn’t make during the strike. On top of that, the shortfall that hits them while they aren’t working can be a massive financial hardship that may cause them to lose their homes, apartments, cars, etc. Worse, unlike the school districts who want to hold onto cash like dragons atop a hoarded treasure, teachers see the students who aren’t getting an education during the strike. They care about those students.
