Most of the time, it’s the parents. Of course, the parents are just members of society. With the exception of students with medical or mental issues, like diagnosed behavior disorders, almost all students’ behaviors and attitudes towards school are a direct reflection of their parents’ behaviors and attitudes. It’s no surprise when I learn that the kid who is reading Hamlet for fun in seventh grade has a mom who is an English professor at a local college. It’s also no surprise when I learn that the kid who constantly gives me attitude and complains about everything has a parent who is immediately adversarial in the parent/teacher conference and blames everyone but their own child for their child’s problems.
